Whitstable

Whitstable is a scenic seaside town in Northeast Kent, in the United Kingdom, 8 kms north of the city of Canterbury and 3 kms west from the town of Herne Bay. It also is a part of Canterbury Local Authority District and is populated with almost 30,000 people.

The Famous Oyster Festival

Whitstable is extremely well-known for its Oysters, and is therefore known as- “Pearl Of Kent” These oysters have been collected since the roman empire, and even now are popular throughout the country.

The most intriguing aspect of the Whitstable is the generosity of Mother Nature on its scenic beauty, which leaves us stunned. Whitstable has an extremely divergent character and its ambience is admired by the visitors of this exceptional town.. It reaches its pinnacle of popularity during the yearly celebrations of the coveted “Oyster Festival” in July. Most of the oysters are imported from Ireland, since the termination of the confined industry. This festival basically continues for nine days, and starts with a traditional opening parade on the closest Saturday to St. James’ Day. This interesting event forms one of the many tourist attractions of the eminent place.

Museums and Galleries

Moreover, apart from this, there is the Whitstable Gallery and museum, which displays portraits and artifacts, which attract many residents and tourists. These are related to the town’s seafaring traditions; especially featuring oysters, also on shipping and diving, making it more attractive. The Museum was presented Nautiek Award for the services to the diving history in about 2001. One also can view the Oyster and Fishery Exhibition, where the town’s delectable seafood can be explored.

Art Attractions

There is the main theatre “the playhouse”, present that is owned by the Lindley Players, the famous theatrical group. Also, in the meantime, this theatre was hired out by some other groups, like the popular naïve Phoenix Theatre Group, and professional Playtime Theatre Company. Many local residents have constituted numerous amateurs choral bands and music, which makes their life more interesting. There was only one cinema in the town called- “Imperial Oyster” but now it has been shut down making a way for some better, more lucrative café.

Geological Features

Other than this, this splendid town has sandy beaches, adjoining the wharf, where the hugely popular activities of swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing and the popular sports activities take place. The most interesting aspect of   Whitstable is “The Street”, which is natural bank strip, which extends at a right angle to coast, and almost for a distance of half a mile making it a hit with the tourists. A magnificent sight of the Street could be observed right from hilltop lawns on the Tankerton slopes.

One can also perceive the traditional windmill at the Borstal Hill which was built in 1815, and is utilized as the motel, which is considered as a renowned landmark of this area.

This town is quite a favorite place for all the water sport enthusiasts. Also, it was established back in 1904, there is the Whitstable Yacht club, which is renowned as one of older most yacht clubs of England. There are also, the Whitstable Town Football, the Isthmian League Division One South, foe all the sporty people.
